Compared to the previous week’s wet deluge, Tuesday brought fine and relatively warm conditions for the 13s second outing of the season and the sun shone as did Willoughby’s players in a good all round winning performance.
Hunningham batted first and similar to last week's opponents were soon in trouble as Lucy Day claimed the first wicket (Hayden Davies with the catch) with only one run on the board, which was then added to by Hayden Davies coming on to take two wickets in two balls to leave the visitors at 10 for 3.
The young Under 11 trio of Ernest Dunn (1 for 6), Ellis Hobbs (0 for 8) and Andrew McCormack (0 for 3) were then introduced to the attack and all three also bowled very well, with Ernest taking a wicket and Andrew having a hand – or foot – in a run out at the non-strikers end.
Hunningham did provide some resistance in the middle order with the big swinging Max making it into double figures and captain making 15. But Willoughby restricted them and the innings closed with the visitors setting a total of 85 for 5 (43 coming in extras).
The 13s reply saw a wicket fall in the first over but Dannie Williams looked comfortable against the opening attack as did Hayden until he missed a straight one (16 for 2), only then for Tom Board and Hammad Mirza to both pop up catches in consecutive balls with the score at 22 for 4.
Dannie and incoming bat Jacob Coe took the score to just short of 50 before Dannie also popped up a catch, departing for 13, only for skipper Charlie Nobes to come in and be run out with the score at 52 for 6 (slide your bat in Charlie!)
However, Jacob and new bat James Field were patient, picked off the singles, ran well between the wickets and left the bad balls and gradually took the score ever closer to the target. Overs 16 and 17 proved fruitful and the pair scampered a single off the first ball of the 18th to see the 13s to their target and first win. Jacob finishing 9 not out, James 8 not out, Willoughby winning by 4 wickets in a good competitive fluctuating game.
Credit to Hunningham too for their part in proceedings and some good performances from their side – we hope to play them again later in the season.
