The Willoughby second XI started their second season in Wednesday night cricket with a home cup tie to the same opponents from last year, Old Laurentians. On a cold April night, the skipper James Andrews won the toss and elected to bat and sent Matt cartridge and Derek Middlemiss to the middle to open, the pair put on a quick 48 stand on in the first six overs before Matt fell. Ambrose then joined Derek in the middle, which saw a period of consolidation. However, in the middle overs we lost a couple more wickets which started disrupting the flow of runs but the only man who couldn’t be stopped was Ambrose who finished on 51 not out and guided Willoughby to a par score of 130, with the best bowler for old Laurentians being Palmer who took 3 for 29 of 4 overs. Willoughby then went out to the field aiming to defend the total, with Matt Sutton and Ryan Lines opening the bowling, after the first 5 0vers the pair had restricted OL’S to 32 for 0 off 5 overs which was very respectful. However, this had allowed the batters to get their eyes in, which led to them picking apart the bowlers, which saw them cruise home to a 10 wicket win with both openers scoring 50 but we can take many positives moving forward to the first league game next week away to Oakfield and Rowlands where the series league action starts.
