Report from Becci Fell
Absolutely fantastic Winning performance from Willoughby CC U15 boys, producing the only Cup game victory for the club this week.
The boys put on a superb display of bowling after Captain Michael Deery won the toss and put Hunningham CC in to bat.
Dom Whitfield smashed through their batting with an impressive 5 wickets for 3 runs off 3 overs, achieving his first 5 wicket haul for the club and a PB. Also shinning with the ball was Justin Hanks with figures of 1 wicket from 3 Maiden overs, Michael Deery 2 wickets for 2 runs off 2 overs and Samay Patel and Charlie Morrison collecting one wicket each. With excellent support in the field from Zachary Droy, Aidan Porter, Harry Day, Yaqub Mirza, Matt McQuillan, Matt Cartridge, Willoughby bowled Hunningham all out for 53 in the 12th over.
Willoughby put themselves in a position where they had to keep a level head chasing a low score to win just their second game of the new season and a cup game at that. The pressure was on and Samay and Matt Cartridge started well but with a couple of miss-judged shots we were two wickets down after the 2nd over but with 17 runs on the board. Captain Michael Deery and Yaqub Mirza put on an impressive 32 partnership before the Captain was dismissed on 15 with Willoughby only needing 5 more runs to win the match. Matt McQuillan joined Yaqub at the wicket. With Yaqub keeping a level head, he hit a winning 4 for the match in the 11th over, finishing on 20 not out.
Myself and Mark are so proud of the boys and really look forward to the season ahead seeing the team come together on and off the field.
A massive shout out has to go to both sets of parents and supporters who really got behind both sets of boys, with support and encouragement creating a friendly and welcoming atmosphere down at The Green, staying for post match drinks to celebrate such a great display of cricket.
But credit to our Willoughby parents who have just been fantastic from the beginning. A big thank you to our resident scorers Rob Cartridge and David McQuillan for continuing to do a fantastic job!
