U11 A Tough Contest

The Rugby captain Ffion Purvis tossed the coin and Eddie Button called heads but it was a tail. Ffion chose to bowl which is what Eddie was intending to do.

Luke Loddick and Noah Kemp opened the batting and defended well but some good bowling from Rugby meant 3 wicket had fallen and the score was 202. Kaitlin and Ollie Morris-Nichols faced a stiff test from ex Willoughby player Vignesh Sadasivan and Matthew Browne. Thy played some nice shot but a further wickets fell and the score remained on 202 Nirmay and Mehul Patel took the score to 204 with Nirmay unluckily losing his wicket to a double bouncer and a big deflection off his pads onto the stumps.. Mehul again managed to keep his wicket intact. The final pairing of Eddie and Aiden approached the wicket in the drizzle knowing they desperately needed some runs. They scored 3 runs from the first over albeit after Edward was bowled by a wet ball which slipped from the bowler's hand producing the perfect slower ball. The next over went well scoring 13 and a four to Eddie. The next over was neutral with 5 runs off the back and a wicket. The final over left the total at 226 with Aiden scoring four runs off the over. A modest total but they'd met a strong bowling attack and fought hard for the runs they'd scored.

Willoughby took the field in the drizzle. A number of times throughout Rugby's innings Nirmay geed up the team saying "come on everyone we don't want the match to end because of the rain". With a small total to defend it was very sporting indeed. Mehul Patel and Ollie Morris-Nicholls opened the bowling and restricted the batsmen to a handful of singles and a few wides. Mehul made an exceptional stop off his own bowling diving full stretch to his left and stopping a certain 4. The first pair Jai Chimna and Jai Pophali left the wicket with the score at 223.Just 4 runs to win assuming the wickets at minus 5 runs didn't tumble. Kaitlin Porter and Luke Loddick contained Vignesh and Matthew Browne to 249. Kaitlin was the most economical Willoughby bowler finishing with figures of 2-0-6- 1. Nirmay, Aiden and Eddie bowled at two good batsmen Pfion Purvis and Ophelia Wenham who took the score to 270. Eddie and Aiden finished it off against another pair of good batsmen, Jamie Carr and Augustus Wenham who top scored with 30. Willoughby bowled in the more difficult conditions with a wet ball and outfield against a strong batting lineup.

Willoughby played a good team with a number of County and District Players. They never let their heads drop, supported each other, gave their best and played some good cricket. I for one am very proud. They were a credit to themselves, their parents and the Club. The defeat didn't feel that big as a result, coupled with the warm welcome from Chris Carr and Rugby CC and the sporting nature of their team. I see friendlies on the horizon.
