Hanks the Destroyer

After the dull drizzle and terrible weather of the previous day the Sunday XI was greeted with a pleasant day. And the opposition? Monks Kirby. Willoughby batted first and the Sunday opening pair of Sean Thornton and Ashley Rayner tucked into the moon balls of Henry and loopy seam of Elkin. A first bowling change and the immovable figure of Rayner (26) perished caught behind off Sharmer to the disbelief of the crowd. The hungover Nikesh Mistry dragged himself to the crease and was bowed for 1, Sharmer then claimed his second scalp by removing the leg stump of Thornton after some wayward nibbly medium pace. Patrick McDonnell's (7) short cameo came to an end after a one handed salmon catch at slip. Another victim of yesterdays alcohol consumption Ryan Perry stumbled to the crease and joined Dan Farrow. Dan's short stint at the crease came to and end for 1, followed by Jake Quinney for 6 and Perry chipped a regulation catch to mid wicket for 9. With the score on 95 Fell and Callum Hanks steadied the ship and provided a partnership of 40 for the 8th wicket. Fell fell for a handy 25, Karl Quinney took over and after some surprisingly nimble running pushed the score to 163. Callum Hanks top scored with a steady 31.

After tea the combination and J Quinney and Kishan Parmer came shuffling in. The chirpy and chatty Coles looked calm, Waktins on the other hand was clean bowled by J Quinney. A big LBW shout ended with umpire Sharmer declaring that because he didn't get one wasn't going to give one either. The oddly named Billyezd didn't hang around and after clearing the pavillion was cleaned up by Quinney K for a rapid 28. The usual wicket for the stiff Rayner and the bowlers chopped and changed from both ends. Thornton, Mistry and McDonnell had a twirl as a partnership of 85 ensued. It was eventually broken by Farrow. With Coles playing nicely and only 30 required victory looked uncertain. Hanks came on to turn his arm over on debut and on a high after his 31* ripped through the middle order. Umpire Sharmer lasted 1 ball and Hanks had a chance of a hat trick. Coles was on strike, the hat trick ball came looping in and was heading for Coles as a full bunger. The fielders dived for cover as Coles wound up his bat aiming for the Palmer estate opposite. A bit of respect as he patted it down for a dot ball. Coles got his deserved 50 but was running out of partners at the other end and chipped the ball into Thornton's grasp with only 10 required. Hanks claimed the last wicket and ended the day with 6 for 7.

A friendly match, unlikely victory and a fantastic man of the match performance for Callum Hanks.
