Patience the key with bat and ball before completing tidy victory.

Willoughby’s second team kept their promotion push on track although they had to show some patience before completing victory over at Brixworth.

Having lost the toss, the visitors were asked to bat on what proved to be a tricky pitch that still show some effects of the previous few day’s rain. Ian Andrews and Chaitanya Kurusala got Willoughby off to a decent quick start with an opening stand of 45 before the change of bowling accounted for them both and then also Keith Gibson. That brought Matt Goss and Ryan Perry together and their watchful progress may have been slow in the middle part of the innings, but their diligence and partnership of 55 proved crucial in setting the platform for the latter overs, especially in the face of some accurate bowling. Goss made 25 as Willoughby built late on to post a competitive 153 for 9 off their 40 overs.

In reply, the hosts were equally as tentative as Willoughby’s opening young pace duo of Jake Quinney and Archie McMillan kept matters tight albeit without getting the reward their six over bursts deserved. However the visitor’s patience was rewarded with the change of bowling as Karl Quinney had opener Will Haxby pinned in front LBW before a run out shortly after accounted for the experienced fellow opener Andrew Roper who to that point had looked steady and potentially a match winner for the hosts.

From there Willoughby’s pressure told as Karl Quinney took three wickets in four balls as part of an unchanged 10 spell which returned figures of 4 for 18, who along with stand-in skipper Fergus Deery (0 for 19) also doing his bit at the other end put the hosts further behind the run rate. With victory virtually in sight, the spin duo of Kurusala and John Gregson then came on and took out the tail of the Brixworth innings with identical figures of 2 for 4 as Brixworth were bowled out for 83, giving Willoughby a deserved 70 run success.
