Willoughby Cricket Club was honoured to host the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at The Green on Sunday in one of the highlights of the club's season. Hosting an MCC fixture is regarded as one of the greatest honours in English club cricket, with MCC sides regularly featuring current and former first-class cricketers alongside some of the country's finest amateur players. The match attracted an excellent crowd of members, supporters and visitors, who enjoyed a fantastic afternoon of cricket in glorious weather.

After winning the toss, Willoughby captain Ben Hollis elected to field first, and his bowlers responded superbly. MCC found scoring difficult from the outset as Mark Fell and Stuart Bonthuys produced an outstanding opening spell, bowling with exceptional discipline and giving the visitors very little room to score freely. Their accuracy laid the foundations for an excellent team bowling performance.

MCC opener I. Jiva looked comfortable before retiring hurt on 26 after unfortunately suffering an injury to his Achilles. Joe Hawkins top-scored with 47, while D. Sutton remained unbeaten on 42, helping MCC reach 225-7 declared from 55 overs.

Although MCC eventually posted a competitive total, the Willoughby bowlers deserved enormous credit. Across 55 overs they conceded just 225 runs at 4.09 runs per over, bowled an outstanding 15 maiden overs, and conceded only five wides throughout the innings. Stuart Bonthuys led the attack with a magnificent spell of 16 overs, 8 maidens, 2-37, while Mark Fell's opening spell of 9 overs, 3 maidens for 30 runs kept the pressure firmly on the visitors. Ben Hollis also impressed with 1-20 from 8 overs, including three maidens, while Ambrose Deery claimed two wickets and Ryan Haynes and Nikesh Mistry chipped in with one apiece. It was a disciplined bowling display that reflected the team's patience, accuracy and determination against a high-quality batting line-up.

Chasing 226, Willoughby lost two early wickets but responded positively through several valuable contributions down the order. A well-made 60 from Chaitanya Kurusala, an aggressive 30 from Ceri Roberts, and an unbeaten 34 from James Andrews ensured the home side remained competitive throughout the chase. However, MCC's experienced bowling attack, led by A. Hammond (4-39) and V. Iyer (3-25), gradually took control as Willoughby were eventually dismissed for 175, giving the visitors victory by 50 runs.

While the result went in MCC's favour, the match was about far more than the final score. The standard of cricket on display, the warm hospitality shown by the club, and the excellent support from members and visitors combined to make it a memorable occasion. Jugdip and his team mates represented the MCC impeccably and the game was played in a great spirit. Special thanks go to everyone who helped organise the day, from preparing the ground, to providing a delicious lunch and tea, to running the bar and BBQ, ensuring the fixture was enjoyed by players and spectators alike.

Hosting the Marylebone Cricket Club is a privilege that few clubs experience. It was a wonderful day that celebrated everything that is great about club cricket tradition, sportsmanship, friendship and community and one that everyone at Willoughby Cricket Club can look back on with great pride.
