Saturday A woes continues with Wardington defeat (24.7.11)

South Northants Division Three

Willoughby A v Wardington

Willoughby ‘A’ (121 for 9 – 5 pts)

Wardington (122 for 5 – 20 pts)

Wardington won by 5 wickets

The news was predictably not so great at The Green as spilled catches and not enough runs on the board again proved costly for Willoughby A in their defeat against visitors Wardington.

The hosts lost the toss and were put into bat, and could not make any momentum throughout their innings, losing wickets at regular intervals. Alex Proudman and Sean Thornton both made 21 at the top and middle of the order, after opener Sean McPhillips made a quick 19, before some late runs from Karl Quinney (14) took Willoughby over three figures to 121 for 9.

In reply, Wardington survived no less than five dropped catches in the opening six overs, which ultimately proved costly. Instead of being at least two wickets down and with little batting in reserve, the visitors reached 58 for 1 at the halfway point. Nikesh Mistry took two wickets in two balls as part of his 3-28, but that glimmer of hope was only literally that as the visitors reached their target with seven overs to spare.
