Promotion secured for 'A' team by chopping Charlton (29.8.09)

Division Four

Willoughby 'A' v Charlton

Willoughby ‘A’ (78 for 3 – 20 pts) beat Charlton (74 all out – 2 pts) by 7 wickets

Willoughby ‘A’: Bhavik Solanki 48 N.O., Abbas Mohammed 11 N.O., Kashif Choudry 11,

Nick Taylor 2-29

Charlton: Graham Knight 23, Ryan Knight 13, James Barnwell 3-15, Simon Blunden 4-21,

Abbas Mohammed 2-15

Any such worries whether Willoughby 'A' would secure the points or win needed to ensure promotion were quickly dismissed with a comprehensive victory over visitors Charlton at The Green.

The hosts needed at least a seven point return to make matters mathematically certain, whilst Charlton who had enjoyed a late surge in form could possibly slip into the second promotion spot if results went their way.

Thankfully for Willoughby, Charlton didn't. The visitors batted first and having recorded some hefty totals in the last six weeks took this week of all weeks to record their lowest total of the campaign, being bowled out for only 74. Graham Knight top scoring with 23, as Simon Blunden and James Barnwell took 4 for 21 and 3 for 15 respectively to put Willoughby on the verge of the points tally and victory they needed.

Despite losing a couple of quick early wickets - as has been the case many a time for the 'A' side this term, Willoughby eased home. Bhavik Solanki made an unbeaten 48 and with Abbas Mohammed (11 not out) ensured an earlier than expected finish at Pye Court, but more importantly the win, by 7 wickets, which ensures an immediate return to Division 3 cricket for the 'A' side next term.
